A fluid leak can cause all sorts of problems for your vehicle. If you notice that your car is leaving behind puddles, you must visit the Chevy service center at Keyes Chevrolet. This could be a minor problem, but it could also be a significant safety hazard.

Types of Fluid Used by Your Vehicle

Your car is filled with many different fluids that help it run smoothly.

  • Motor oil lubricates the engine, protects it from damage, and keeps it operating as efficiently as possible.
  • Coolant helps regulate your engine during extreme temperatures.
  • Brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield wiper fluid are also essential in keeping your car operating correctly.

We'll check your fluid levels during service appointments, but visit us immediately if you see a leak between visits. A lack of wiper fluid can mean a slightly streaky windshield, but a brake fluid leak could reduce your braking responsiveness and even cause an accident!

Common Leaks to Watch Out For

How can you identify common fluid leaks?

  • If you see a puddle near where the front of your vehicle was parked, it's probably oil. Dip a piece of paper towel in the liquid and look at it. If it's brown or black and has a burnt odor, it's oil.
  • Antifreeze can also leak near the front of your vehicle, but it has a thinner consistency than oil and a green, red, or orange color depending on the manufacturer; it also smells sweet.
  • Transmission fluid can leak near the center of your vehicle. It looks like oil, but it should have more of a reddish color.
  • If your leak doesn't fall into one of the categories above, it could be brake fluid or transmission fluid.
