Oil changes are some of the most common and most necessary types of services that you will get completed on your Chevy car. But how much do you actually know about why oil changes are necessary and what happens during the oil change? Here at Keyes Chevrolet, our team of certified Chevy mechanics is happy to answer some of the most common questions about a Chevy oil change.

How Often Do I Need to Get Oil Changes?

There is no consensus answer anymore about oil change frequency, as it depends on the make and model of your vehicle. Consult your car’s vehicle maintenance schedule in order to find the specific oil change interval. Most of today’s engines are designed to run for 5,000 miles or more without getting an oil change.

Does Motor Oil Expire?

Motor oil can expire, but there are several factors that go into this question. If the bottle has never been opened, stored at 40 to 85 degrees and in an environment without high humidity, it is highly unlikely to be expired. With that being said, getting a professional oil change at our Chevy service center will erase any doubt of expired oil.

How Can I Tell if My Motor Oil is Bad?

Most newer Chevy models will offer a digital readout of your remaining oil life. However, if you want to look under the hood, pull out the dipstick. If you check your engine oil and notice that the oil comes out in globs on the dipstick, you’re likely due for an oil change. If the oil looks milky, it could be interacting with water, which is an issue that requires more than just an oil change to fix.
